The Illume Reading Resources

Illume Reading

The Illume Reading resources are divided into three stages. It’s up to you to decide which stage is best for your student. Need help deciding where to begin? Don’t hesitate to get in contact with us.

The Three Stages

Stage A - Beginning

The beginning reader is one who is just commencing their reading journey. They have enjoyed being read to and have developed the necessary pre-reading skills and phonological awareness to begin the reading process. During this stage, we introduce them to the simplest sight words and phonemes, and support their understanding of how we use this knowledge to read texts. The student engages in a range of texts with a focus on the development of literal comprehension skills and recall. Learning is personalised and relatable to ensure that student interest and motivation remains high.

Stage B - Emerging

The emerging reader is continuing to build their understanding of sight words and phonics and is starting to understand how to use these when reading. They have a small bank of words that they can read by sight and are able to identify some of the basic phonemes. During this stage, we continue to build their sight word knowledge and begin to introduce phonemes and their various graphemic (letter) representations. The student engages in a range of texts with a focus on the development of both literal and inferential comprehension skills and recall. Learning is personalised and relatable to ensure that student interest and motivation remains high.

Stage C - Developing

The developing reader has an understanding of both sight words and phonics and is developing the skills required to use these strategies independently to identify unfamiliar words. They have developed a significant bank of sight words and knowledge of basic phonemes. We continue to introduce more complex sight words as well as phonemes that are represented by multiple letter combinations. The student engages in a range of texts with a focus on the development of higher order thinking and comprehension skills. Learning is personalised and relatable to ensure that student interest and motivation remains high.

These techniques work together to activate different parts of the brain and target individual student strengths and interests. Varied activities within each of these stages result in repeated exposure to the target word or sound through a variety of engaging methods and approaches (hearing, seeing, speaking and writing).

One of the best things about Illume Reading is that all of the resources you need are included. For example, during the Match It and Find It steps, students use flash cards that are all provided. Writing worksheets are included on a USB so students can practice writing each of the word they are learning. Simply print them out as you need them! The USB also contains activity sheets and games such as “Bingo” and “Sight Word Car Parking” that you can print off and use throughout all of the 5 steps.
